Sealants
At the dental office of Marvin Herschfus Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we not only want to repair damage, but prevent it altogether. Sealants are very effective in preventing tooth decay especially in children, whose young permanent molars are softer during the first 3 years they erupt into the mouth. Did you know that over 90% of those deep grooves and crevices that were protected did not decay while 50% of children’s teeth left protected without sealants did developed tooth decay? Sealants are thin white resin coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the teeth to form a protective barrier. They are most often used on young molars and pre-molars because these surfaces have deep ridges and groove that are hard to clean. Bacteria often become trapped and cause decay. Sealants create an easy-to-clean surface to promote good oral hygiene.

Dental sealants can be applied in just a few minutes. Dr. Marvin Herschfus, will first clean and dry the tooth, then paint the sealant onto those grooves of the teeth and harden it with a special light. Sealants are most often used for our younger patients who have not yet experienced tooth decay or damage. However, adults may benefit from sealants if they do not have tooth decay or existing dental restorations. For more information, we encourage you to contact our Berkley dental office today.
